Publication date: July 30th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Attorney Amee sets aside her own needs to juggle the broken pieces of her life and family until mechanic Ben repairs her heart.

Divorce attorney Amee Benton—who has an ex of her own—is pretty sure she’s a #MomFail. Showing up late on a Friday night to retrieve her car from the shop and finding the pink frosted cupcakes she forgot to leave at her daughter’s ballet camp confirms it.

When mechanic, Ben Mathis, confesses to stealing one of the confections and asks who is taking care of Amee, she knows he’s a unicorn—a magical, beautiful beast who surely only exists in fantasies. And she tells him just that. With an f bomb for good measure.

Amee has three things Ben finds irresistible in a woman—brains, a family, and a serious potty mouth. At a chance run-in at Ben’s own personal hell, AKA the mall, he summons the courage to ask her out. Though Amee is leery of dating a younger man, and Ben is more than aware of their social gap, the two take a chance.

But Amee’s life isn’t like his. And when her ex returns and the doubting divorcée blunders, all of Ben’s insecurities are piqued anew. Now, Amee must prove to Ben his worth is much more than stand-in dad and rebound boyfriend or she’ll watch magic gallop off into the forest forever.

Duggan’s was a not-too-hip, not-too-chic coffee shop downtown. It had its own parking lot and outdoor seating with canvas umbrellas for overly sunny days.

Ben—I didn’t know his last name—was sitting at a table for two toward the edge of the terrace. His long-sleeved army green Henley was pushed up to the elbows and his casual sprawled posture opposed the nerves brewing in my belly. He stood when he saw me, those damn dimples pressing into his cheeks with his smile.

Time to face the unicorn.

He side-stepped around the table and pulled out the wicker chair for me. The earthy scent from Friday night returned, this time without the motor oil.

The grittiness of his voice made me swallow hard, and I sat in the chair. He reached up to adjust the angle of the umbrella to protect us from the sun. What promised to be the perfectly formed V of his lower abdomen peeked out from between a black elastic waistband under his jeans and the green shirt.

Unicorn cupcake eating man candy. Shit. I was in over my head. He was way out of my league. My workouts consisted of me taking the stairs and vacuuming with headphones on. I hadn’t even been on a date since Pete and I had divorced. I shouldn’t have been allowed to play ball.

New planExcuse my behavior from Friday night, tell him I was not ready for any kind of relationship, go home and take a long, long shower thinking about his stomach.

“Sorry I’m late,” I said as he took his seat.

“I assumed you would be.” He scooted in, and before he could say anything else, the waiter came over. I ordered a fluffy complicated sugary mess of caffeine and Ben asked for just a water.

“You don’t drink coffee?”

“Nope.” He crossed his arms. “So, let’s hear it, Amee Benton.”

“Hear what?” There was no way in hell I would tell him why I’d called him a unicorn. A fucking unicorn.

“Your list.” His blue gaze challenged me from the opposite side of the table, then he blinked.

“What list? I don’t have a list.”

“Yes, you do. You have a list of why you’re not going to give me your phone number and agree to see me again.”

I sank a little into my chair before puffing out my chest, mulling over my next move.

“Maybe you should tell me your list.” Every muscle on my cheeks wanted to smile but years of questioning witnesses had polished my game face. I shaped parallel lines with my forearms on the black wire tabletop.

“Which one do you want me to tell you about?” he asked with a casual grin.

Stupid dimples. His dimples were dumb. Dumb like puppies.

“How many are there?” I raised my eyebrows.

“Many. Many. So many lists…” Leaning in, he licked his lips. He lightly traced a semi-circle on the top of my hand. “Grocery lists, home repairs, back to school…”

The breath from the base of my lungs rose up my chest and escaped slowly through the ‘O’ I’d formed with my mouth. I hadn’t been touched like that in ages and mundane tasks had never sounded better. Christ. I was practically panting.

His recoil startled me and he cleared his throat. The waiter set down our drinks, breaking the beautiful tension.

Creamy froth parted as I blew into the mug before taking a cautious sip. Without the haze of his touch, I regrouped. I placed my coffee on the table and he drank from his water bottle.

“Why?” I asked.

“Why what?” He screwed the cap on and set the bottle on the table.

I’d studied body language. I knew liars and I knew nervousness. His open legs and arms were neither. He was confident, honest. Real.

“Why me?”

A small airy chuckle accompanied a shake of his head and his blond hair brushed against his shoulders.

“Why not you, Amee Benton?”

Questioning soon-to-be-ex-spouses was much more satisfying. They weren’t allowed to answer questions with questions.

“What’s your last name?” I squinted.

“Mathis. And because I like you.”

I sipped my coffee.

He propped his elbows on his knees and searched my eyes. “And you’re kinda beautiful. Beauty and a dirty mouth are a weakness of mine.”

“Like cupcakes?” I fought the smile, but when his dimples appeared, I lost the battle.

“Just like cupcakes.” He shifted in his seat and pulled his phone from his back pocket. Quick tapping from his thumbs hit the screen before he slid it to me.

“May I please have your phone number?”

Yes. He could. Shit.

I picked up the phone. Under the heading New Contact, there was one word. Cupcake. I giggled, like a school girl in a candy shop. Pitiful. I typed in my number, hit new message and sent myself a text.

Satisfied, I grinned and handed the phone back to him. Instead of reviewing my handiwork, he set it face-down on the table.

“You’re not going to check? Make sure it’s the real number?”

“Nope.” He popped the ‘p’.

My toes twitched in my flats. The remainder of my coffee and foam clung to the edges of my cup and trailed down to the empty bottom.

“Are you free Friday night?” Ben asked with a rasp.

Coffee had been one thing. Safe. The sun was shining. Friday night would be a date. Risky. Dark.

“What did you have in mind?” I asked. The man had other lists. Lists hidden in his dimples and heavenly touch.

“A movie. Popcorn.” He lifted a shoulder.

One small step for Ben Mathis and a giant leap for Amee Benton. Crap. A firetruck and its sirens raced by on Third Avenue and the intrusive sound gave me a minute to think. This is what I’d wanted when I’d divorced Pete, right? A chance for something deeper before I shriveled up and had as many cats as Shae had dolls.

But then Pete had gotten drunk and killed another human being. He’d pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and had been taken away to a correctional facility within months, locking away my bright future behind bars with him. Instead of free weekends to build a new life, I had one hundred percent parenting duties twenty-four-seven, not to mention my career.

But Ben’s touch had answered a faded call—a call to be selfish, a call to be human.

“Can I meet you there? I’m not sure the girls are ready for their mom to be on a date.”

“I’ll text you.” He flipped over the check and dug into his front pocket.

With the money and check secured under my used coffee cup, Ben walked me to my car. When we arrived at the driver’s side door, I turned around to face him. He pushed his arm into the window and crowded my space.

“I gotta admit that I’m a little disappointed.” He was close. So close. And the hair on the back of my neck stiffened with the scratch in his voice.

I could have kissed him. I could have absolutely kissed him. Right there. Broad daylight. Sunday morning. Did. Not. Care.

I summoned any courage I had and asked, “Why’s that?”

Soft stubble caressed my cheek as he leaned into my ear. His warm breath brushed my neck as he whispered with his ridiculous rasp, “I was looking forward to your dirty mouth.”

My expression must have been his desired response, because when he stepped back and freed the heat between us, his grin stretched from ear to ear.

“See ya Friday, Cupcake.”

He swaggered away and climbed into a beat-up truck.

Revised planShower and a lonely orgasm.

It all started with a broken down Porsche and a stolen cupcake. That is how Amee Benton met her unicorn, Ben.

Amee has a successful career as a lawyer and does well for herself. Her life as of the past year, has not been a good one. He ex husband went to jail for vehicular manslaughter and her daughters were bullied because of it. Amee has not taken care of herself and has suffered for it.

Ben wants a better life. He is a great guy, who works hard as a mechanic, attends night school and helps take care of his cousins son. He only wants to find a family and love. He is sexy as sin and sweet as can be. He scrapes to get by and sometimes lacks the confidence in himself to achieve his goals.

Everything changes for these two the day they meet. It is an instant attraction from the start. Ben wants to build a relationship, but Amee has hard time accepting it. She constantly worries about what others think and sometimes screws up. Everything gets worse when her ex Peter gets out of jail.

Will Ben and Amee make it? Or will Amee let the social differences get in the way?

Ben and Amee’s story is wonderful and inspiring. They really have lots of challenges to overcome throughout the book. Challenges that most divorcee woman suffer and deal with in real life. This adds a touch of reality to a fictional story. The book is easily relateable and the story flows nicely.

The characters in this book really do make it come alive. Especially Amee’s daughter Shae. She is such a glittery delight. The things she says cracks me up. Like all children her age, she tells it like it is and says the darnedest things.

If you like a love story that proves there is love after heartbreak and that families can survive divorce, then this book is for you. An inspiring read full of amazing and wonderful characters. This book is sure to be a soul reaching story. So pick up your copy today.

She dropped her gaze and caught sight of a shiny pink patch of skin on the underside of his wrist. Familiar with him, every part of him, in this place like she was nowhere else, she snagged his hand to peer at it closer. “What happened?”

Aidan stilled under her light touch. “A small burn from our last fire. No big deal.”

That brought her head up and the world slowed on its axis as her gaze collided with his sky-blue eyes. “I thought dragons couldn’t be burned?”

For once, he answered. “If we’re injured in a way that leaves a gash in our scales, we can be.”

“How would you—”

Those blue eyes shut down, shuttering, the color even dulling. “I can’t talk about it with you.” This time he was more forceful in his conviction.

“Right.” Sera dropped her gaze, hiding her hurt. “Silly human,” she murmured as she absently ran a finger over that patch of damaged skin—smooth under her fingertips.

“It’s the rules. For your safety.” Had his voice dropped? The subtle scent of smoke mixed with an earthier hue drifted around her. Damn he smelled delicious. His unique essence reminded her of her Tempranillo wine—her favorite of all of them—dark and bold. She could practically taste it now.

Too serious.

They were way too serious for just a dream. Pulling her shoulders back, Sera lifted her head, bright expression in place. “I could kiss it better for you.” She cast a teasing smile his way.

His lips tipped up in a crooked grin that she never, ever saw in real life. At the same time, his eyes ignited, glowing with sky-blue flames, and she shivered with an answering lick of need.

“I was hoping you might,” he murmured.

They hadn’t talked much after that.

Memory buffeted her as that familiar sweet ache spread in response to picturing what they’d done together.

Hands, sure and steady, brushed over her skin, up her legs, over her belly, pulling moans from her lips.

Sera took Aidan’s face in her hands. “More.”

He’d given her much more.

But, with harsh reality and the early morning sun streaming in through the cracks in her blinds, Sera squeezed her eyes shut against the urge to go back and find him in the comforting dark. She wasn’t ready to force herself to try to forget those moments.

Because she had to forget. To write off their time together as never having happened. As just a dream. Otherwise, being around him in real life hurt too much. Like she was missing something or had lost something.

Book 2 in the Fire’s Edge series, it focuses on Aidan and Sera’s story and oh what a beautiful story it is. Sera is Delaney’s best friend and the owner of the winery. She is also a single mother, having been widowed in the beginnings of her son Blake’s life. She is strong and very independent, but as of lately things seem out of character for her. She feels like she is missing something. Maybe the dreams are what she is missing.

Aidan, an orphaned dragon, taken in before he became rogue, has worked very hard to be where he is today. As an enforcer he now carries some respect, but most important of all, he has a place of belonging with a family. His brothers. But there is something else he wants that he can never have, Sera.

The tables turn for Aidan and Sera when the change begins. Aidan notices it in her eyes, but when he finds the family crest marking her skin, he realizes he will never have her if the marks are true. She belongs to another and he would be better off if he just left her alone. But can he?

One thing I can say about these books, is that with each book the story only gets better and better. As the stories of our dragon fire fighters continue, more and more secrets are revealed and the intensity of the story just continues to grow. This book just proves it.

Overall this book was a page turner of epic proportions. Full of twists and turns. Enemies and frenemies. Those who are not to be trusted just may prove us wrong in our assumptions of them. This book is non stop action and an attraction that is too strong to ignore.

With amazing characters, this series is sure to capture your attention and pull you into the magical world of dragon shifters. You will be addicted from the very first pages. With the twists and turns, you will have a hard time figuring out what danger lurks ahead and who is responsible for those dangers. True moments of shock and awe.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting these characters, then I suggest you do. You will fall in love with the world of dragons and the amazing creatures that they are. I would start with The Mate and work your way up. You will be so glad you did.

4.18  ·   Rating details ·  22 ratings  ·  21 reviews

One daring kiss with the playboy tempts the good girl, but can she tame him?

Autry Hill may be a cowboy to his boots, but he’s also gained quite the reputation as a charmer and playboy. His parents aren’t sure he’s ready to take the reins of the family’s prosperous Texas ranch, so they set up a challenge: No women or scandal for the next six months and the ranch house he grew up in is his. Easy peasy, Autry thinks. He’s already tired of late nights and romancing, until elementary school teacher Beth Cooper happens to cross his path. Suddenly Autry is losing his heart, his mind, and what’s left of his reputation.

Oh my!!! Kadie Scott has done it again. Another fun loving read in The Hills of Texas series.

In this third book in the series we get the story of Autry Hill. Autry is the only of the Hill siblings, who lives at home and works the ranch. He loves the house and the ranch. He won’t give that up for nothing.

When Autry’s parents get tired of his Casanova ways, they give him an ultimatum, no women and no sex for 6 months or they will not leave him the house free and clear. Little do they know, Autry can keep that bet. He has been for months. He is tired of the mindless dating scene and has just really been concentrating on work. But his family has little faith in him. But he will prove to them that he can do it and show them the real him. That is till Beth Cooper came along. Now he has to make a choice house or love?

I absolutely love this series. Each one full of fun and mischief. The characters are all lovable and unique in their own way. Autry and Beth are no different. Autry is the hot and sexy cowboy. Beth is the quiet, shy teacher. He wants her, she thinks she is not in his league. Both fighting against the odds for love.

Overall this is a fun and sassy book. Autry has his hands full with Beth. Beth can give as good as she gets. Their story is fun and exciting. A steady paced read full of adventure and odd situations, that will make you laugh your tail off. I highly recommend this book and all the others in the series. They are wonderful romantic comedy’s that could give Hallmark a run for it’s money. So grab a glass of wine and settle down with Taming the Troublemaker. You won’t regret it.

Summoned to Thirteenth Grave

(Charley Davidson #13)

by Darynda Jones (Goodreads Author)

4.48  ·   Rating details ·  836 ratings  ·  380 reviews

Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the final installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series!

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plain for eternity – which is the appropriate amount of time to make a person starkraving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.

She’s missed Reyes and her daughter, Beep, but now that she’s back on earth, it’s time to put to rest burning questions that need answers. What happened to her mother? How did she really die? Who killed her? And are cupcakes or coffee the best medicine? It all comes to a head in an epic showdown between good and evil in this final smart and hilarious novel.

OMG!!!! What an ending to the most amazing series ever!!! I cannot believe it is over and how she ended this with a very big unanswered question……Where is Osh?

Charley is back from banishment after “One hundred seven years, two months, fourteen days, twelve hours, and thirty-three minutes.” What does she find upon her return, The Shade. The Shade is spreading out of the hell dimension she accidentally opened and it is taking over Albuquerque. People are infected with demons and going crazy.

After a heartfelt reunion with the gang, Charley must come up with a plan to save Albuquerque and the infected. But in true form, there are many unknowns, with plenty of heart stopping twists. On the edge of my seat, I followed along as Charley embarks on her biggest challenge yet. And boy is it a dozy. It may just be her last.

Reyes and Charley are the most sexual and hot couple out there in the paranormal world. Being Gods is just a bonus in their book. I love these two characters and the adventures they have embarked on together. The fit together like two perfect puzzle pieces. Working together to save humanity and Beep. They were made for one another….literally.

Charley Davidson and Reyes Farrow: That thing that happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object. —True fact

This book holds true to form with the funny chapter headings as well. I love the funny memes, t-shirt quotes, bumper stickers and facts. They really crack me up. Not to mention true to Darynda form, these books are full of funny sarcasm that will have you in stitches. Let us not forget Charley’s addiction to coffee. That will never change no matter what celestial plane she is on.

I’m not really into the whole “rise and shine” thing. Most days I just caffeinate and hope for the best. —Bumper sticker

I got to say, being the last book in the series Darynda really socked it to her readers. There were thrills, chills and tears galore. Throughout this whole series she has completely captivated her audience and kept us all addicted. I can’t imagine a world without Charley and the gang. And it seems I may not have to. With an ending like this one, there is only one way to go from here…..a spin off series. So as an avid fan, I will sit back, hope and pray that this is truly not the end. Please, please, please let this continue in some way or form known best as spin off.

Darynda is a fantastic story writer, full of imagination and excellent writing skills. Her books are highly addictive. She has this way of creating a world that you could get lost in. A world full of amazing characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Her books are amazing adventures full of fun, danger and romance. Beautiful creations.

Bravo Darynda for another job well done. If I could give this book a million trillion stars ⭐️ I would. I absolutely love this series and am sad to see it end. But all great things must come to an end. It is sad to see the end, but here’s to looking forward to new beginnings.

Wow! This series is heating up. Julie Hall is still healing from her last brush of danger. She is starting to think it may be time to start taking in new cases. So she starts weeding through her emails and picking an easy one. A missing hiker. With Garrett out on a case she turns to Tracey to help her.

Even though her first case back went smoothly, doesn’t mean her life is back on track. She still has major trust issues and those issues are made worse as Garrett starts displaying some odd behavior. He is keeping secrets and Julie is not liking it one bit.

Things start to get worse when Garrett disappears and leaving behind cryptic messages. “Trust no one”. With no one to turn to she begins to worry and takes on her own investigation into his disappearance. Things start heating up and danger lurks around every corner. Will Julie find Garrett, before someone turns up dead?

This book really focuses on the relationship between Garrett and Julie. It dives deep into it and shows all the cracks. Some of these cracks start to break open and Julie doesn’t know if love will be enough for them. She shows her vulnerability more in this book. All the healing she has done is shown, but she still struggles with several things. Mainly TRUST. With everything that is going on with Garrett, the trust they have built is tested and on thin ice, full of several fissure cracks.

I really enjoy this series. Julie is a strong character. She has several issues and past horrors that make her the way she is, but yet she is stronger than most give her credit for. She doesn’t see this for herself, naturally. But her strength is there.

Wendy has created a unique story line with the Bodies of Evidence series. Her characters are strong and supportive. The cases are unique and full of twists to keep you guessing. I really love this series and can’t wait to see how our two lovebirds move past this.

If you love a bit of the unknown and unique paranormal with a twist of mystery and a dash of romance, then this series is for you. Please read them in order or you may not understand the characters without the back story. It is an excellent read and I guarantee you will enjoy it.
