(The Hills of Texas #1)

There’s a storm brewin’…

The day his wife died, Sheriff Cash Hill discovered she was leaving him for another man, one she’d loved since before their marriage. How could the single dad ever trust another woman again? Holly Jensen left La Colina, Texas with regrets. She’s returned home to work as the new large animal vet and to watch over her best friend’s daughter. But Holly’s knowledge of Georgia’s past could rip a family apart. And she’s reluctant to go to the sexy…and single…sheriff, as he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with her.

Both are faced with a choice…stay locked in the past or allow their reservations to be silenced by a passion hotter than Texas summer nights. Can they learn to trust their own hearts and each other?

Praise for The Hills of Texas Series:

2016 RWA Emily Award Winner – Short Contemporary Romance

✭✭✭✭✭ “I really loved this story and its slow pace…. What made me love this story even more was the authenticity of scenes. So touching!” ~Maria, Goodreads Reader

✭✭✭✭✭ “This is one of those feel good books that you can’t put down because you want to see what is going to happen next because both Cash and Holly are both set in their ways and can’t see what is right in front of them and you really want them to get things right so you keep reading because the book is just that good. This is a great start to a series and I can’t wait to see what happens to the rest of the Hill clan.” ~Sarah, Goodreads Reader

✭✭✭✭ “I really enjoyed both characters and their strength but most of all their chemistry. Fighting their attraction was sweet and fun and futile attempt to overcome what’s meant to be. This first book in this series makes me excited for the Hill brothers!” ~Carolyn, Goodreads Reader

Excerpt #1 (600 words):

Gear loaded, she walked into the barn, breathing in the familiar scents of hay and horse and leather, and took some time to shake it off. She walked along the stalls, patting the velvety noses of the animals.

Yes, all her training, and a lot of time spent dissecting and practicing on animal cadavers, had given her a certain amount of distance from any emotions related to her job, but that didn’t make her a robot. Besides, these days it was more about the distress of their owners.

Most cowboys had seen too many dead animals to care anymore. Heck, they raised them for slaughter, much of the time, so they couldn’t let themselves get attached or emotional. Will was a rancher. He’d seen this before. But she knew with this kind of stock he’d likely put his heart and soul into his horses, so losing one was hard. Holly felt for him, but she’d found that owners needed their vets to be a rock—professional, efficient and only borderline sympathetic. She could do that. In fact, she was good at it, but she often needed time alone afterward to let it all go.

She stopped and scrunched up her face at Cash’s voice. Couldn’t a girl just get a second by herself?

Apparently, she hadn’t been very successful at hiding the evidence of her irritation because he frowned down at her as soon as she swung around.

“You okay?” he asked in a gruff voice. The question didn’t quite match the rather stoic look he gave her, as though he was irritated with himself for asking the question.

She gave a deceptively sunny smile. “Fine as a fiddle.”

After a beat of silence, he glanced around with raised eyebrows. “Why are you in here?”

“Curiosity got the better of me. I was checking out Will’s stock.”

He crossed her arms and gave her an assessing look from those clear blue eyes. She could just imagine that look on his face when he was interrogating a suspect. “I’m sure Will would be happy to show you.”

“Right.” She moved with purpose toward the door leading outside, intending to go up to the house, but stopped as she got up close to Cash and realized he wasn’t moving.

Tipping her head back, Holly raised her eyebrows. “Something else?”

“Is it hard? Putting them down?”

How had he guessed? Holly stared at him for a brief moment, part of her reluctant to admit, even to herself, this was the hardest part of her job, and part of her strangely drawn to sharing something so personal with Cash.

“Not really.” She shrugged.

He didn’t respond, nor did he move to let her by. Gently, he reached out and tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear. “Don’t let yourself get too callous about it.”

Holly held her breath at the shock of his touch and the resulting sensation his action caused. Electric was the description that came to mind. “No?” She was proud of how steady her voice sounded.

His eyes dropped to her lips. Slowly, he shook his head. “Uh-uh. ’Cause then you wouldn’t be you.”

Holly swore her heart stopped beating. Then reality intruded. What was she doing? What was he doing?

Holly jerked back from his touch. Trying to cover the awkwardness, she tucked her hands in her back pockets. “Thanks for the advice.”

Her sudden movement seemed to snap Cash out of whatever spell he’d been under as well. With what was clearly a forced laugh, he stepped to the side, letting her pass. “Yeah.”Related image

Excerpt #2 (400 words):

Holly opened the door and her welcoming smile froze on her face at the sight of Cash standing there. Not one of the younger Hills, like Autry or Jennings, whom she’d sort of expected. Dang, he looked yummy in jeans and a black button-down shirt casually rolled up at the sleeves, showing his tanned, muscled forearms. Heat rushed through her and pooled low in direct response to the visual impact he had on her.

She blinked at him for a second before she realized he seemed equally stunned. His gaze traveled down her in a lazy perusal before returning to her face. Holly would swear to a judge in court she’d seen desire burning in his eyes before he blanked his expression and gave her a polite smile. Holly ruthlessly tamped down her own response to him. She wasn’t a teenager anymore, dammit. What was wrong with her?

“Hi, Holly,” he said casually. “You look great. You’ll have to beat all the men off with sticks tonight.”

She didn’t miss the subtle hint he wouldn’t be one of them.

Hurt prickled. She was getting a little sick of his attitude. Not that she could call him on being rude—he’d been polite, but distant. Why had he bothered to be the one to pick her up?

“Hi, Cash. Thanks for the ride.”

She stepped outside into the warmth of the night and turned around to lock the door. Unfortunately, her old house chose that moment for the door to stick. She gritted her teeth and jerked on it a couple of times to no avail.

“Sweet baby in a manger, budge,” she muttered at the stubborn door.

Suddenly, Cash reached forward. “Here. Let me.”

She stayed perfectly still as he leaned around her and forced the door to close, his warm, solid chest pressed up against her back. She’d worn a dress with red and white stripes, a halter top and wide skirt with pockets. It offered little protection for her now, although Holly suspected she could be wearing a thick fur coat and she’d still feel every inch of where he touched her. It only took him seconds to jimmy the darn door, but it felt like longer.

Finally, Cash stepped back and let her finish locking it.

“Thanks,” she mumbled.

Holly turned and flashed a perky smile. “Ready is another one of those relative terms. Like going.”Related image

Excerpt #3 (230 words):

From the little he’d seen, Holly took care of everyone around her, but who took care of Holly? Realization struck that she had no one.

He knew that feeling. Despite having close family to back him up, Cash had felt never felt so alone. The thought of Holly experiencing that too didn’t sit well with him.

Cash did the only thing he could think of. He reached out and laid his hand on her cheek. Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn’t pull away.

“You can talk to me, Holly. If you ever need anything. Okay?”

Silently, she nodded.

He should have pulled his hand away. Should have led her back inside. But he didn’t. Couldn’t.

The feelings that’d been building all night, hell since she’d come back to town, demanded action. As if compelled, he brushed the pad of his thumb over her high cheekbone and registered the silky-smooth texture of her skin, the warmth. He dropped his gaze to the lush curves of her lips, which were slightly parted. Needing to see her eyes, he moved his hand and tipped her chin up.

Slowly, giving her enough time to pull away or say no, he lowered his head toward her. So softly it was barely a whisper of a touch, he brushed his lips over hers.

Her small intake of breath made him shudder. “Cash,” she sighed.

My Review

Ok this is the second book by Kadie Scott that I have had the pleasure of reading.  I must say I am becoming a huge fan.  I already bought her last book the Attraction Equation to read.  I read and reviewed The Wrong Kind of Compatible not long ago and loved it!  So I was not surprised when I read this book, that I would love it.

In this story Sheriff Cash Hill is a single father of a sweet 4-year-old and a recent widower of a year now.  He is struggling through life and can’t seem to find his happiness.  His daughter is suffering the same fate.  That is until his wife’s best friend Holly moves to town.

Holly has moved back to her hometown as a favor to her dead best friend.  She promised Georgiana that she would look after her daughter Sophie should anything happen to her.  So she has moved back home after her college degree and gotten a job as the new vet lady who specializes in horses.  There is just one problem.  Cash avoids her like she is the plague.

Cash has tried to  avoid Holly but he can’t seem to quit running into her.  He believes that she is just like his wife.  Full of secrets and ready to leave at the drop of a hat.  But he is so drawn to her.  When secrets do come out and she is the center of them he is angry and wants nothing to do with him.

Holly is in love with Cash.  She has been since she was a teenager.  But she stepped back when her best friend took him.  Now that she is back to look after Sophie she can’t help but feel those feelings resurface.  But when a secret makes him angry, she loses all hope of any kind of relationship.  But Holly never deserved a family or to be loved anyway.

This book was a sweet and wonderful romantic read with a deliciously hot cowboy.  Who wouldn’t love that right?!?  I love the way the story is written with a believable world and situations.  Kadie took her time telling the story of Cash and Holly and their story flowed smoothly.  A definite cozy up by the fire with a large glass of wine kind of story.

The characters in this book were wonderful.  So entertaining and fun.  I loved Holly!  She was so wonderful, even if she felt guilty and almost ruined her happiness because of that guilt.  Cash on the other hand was like a tennis match.  Back and forth, back and forth with his feelings.  I almost go whiplash.  I wanted to yell at him “get your ass together man!”  So imagine how happy it made me to finally see that happen.

So cozy on up and grab your wine, because you are in for a treat with this book.  You will not regret your decision to read it.  I promise. A Hallmark worthy moment.

Kadie keeps it up she will have a bright bright future in the book world.

Blog Tour w/review| RISE (Coven of Fire Book 1)

Sierra Cross
(Coven of Fire, #1)
Publication date: June 15th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

I closed the door on magic long ago…the day it made me an orphan.

Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives—my mother among them—to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it’s back.

As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I’m the key to reviving the coven. And there’s an incredibly sexy guardian stranded on my couch who’s promising to help me stop the demons and keep the veil between the realms standing.

One problem: I’ve never been able to use magic. Our local bad boy warlock assures me I have the talent, but even if I did, we don’t have enough witches to complete a coven. The only way to survive is to pull together this pack of magicborn misfits, who have more secrets than spells, into a makeshift coven.

Can we—three untrained witches, a sarcastic warlock, and an overly intense guardian—take back the city…before the demongate falls and the forces that killed my mother destroy us too?

My Review

What a great story.  Full of action.

In this first book of the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series, we get introduced to our main character Alix.  She is a witch, who believes she is magically deficient.  She lost her parents in an accident when she was a teen.  She tried to practice magic when she was younger, but never could master anything.  Now she is just a bartending wont with a quick temper.

amazon witch GIF by Bureau of Magic

As the story goes on and introduces more characters we meet her guardian Matt.  He is incorporeal at first, but she brings him back from the veil he was trapped in for 10 the past years since her parents passed.  Matt teaches her what happened the night her parents died.  Now he is her guardian and will watch over her.  But there is one problem, their chemistry.  It is so strong and the pull is hard to resist.  She wants him, he wants her, but it is forbidden by law for them to be together.  On top of this there is an evil brewing.  And it is gunning for her.  She now has to find her magic and stop the evil that is trying to consume her.

witch GIF

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Matt and Alix.  Alix is a kick ass witch and she is slowly peeling off the binds of her magic on layer at a time.  Matt is special.  Not just because he is a guardian.  There is more to him than meets the eye and I hope to learn more about it in the next book.

This book was very entertaining.  The world it is building is amazing, creating an intriguing story plot.  In this book we get the back story of how this all began.  We experience treachery and betrayal along with forbidden love.  This book is action packed from the start and kept my attention from the very first page.

A true battle of good vs evil.  Black Magic vs the Light.

I wonder what is in store for Alix and her band of misfits?!

A serial killer…

A past that haunts no matter how much the distance…

Which one will strike first?

Eighteen deaths over eight years has left Shane Peters itching to find his mark. The death that started it all ensured his obsession with the murderer who had turned his life into a living hell, leaving him to raise a newborn daughter on his own.

Starting over wasn’t the easiest thing, but Emberlyn Roth had managed by shear grit and the skin of her teeth. It’s too bad one can’t outrun their past.

A protector of the wronged, Shane is torn between his duty as a detective for the Jacksonville PD and a quest to find himself some peace. Red tape binds his capabilities and moonlighting as an investigator for Nightshade Securities has him feeling stretched thin. Late nights on the streets and his sense of duty keeps him from being the father he wants to be. Throw onto his already rickety house of cards, an attraction to the mysterious Emberlyn, the lead he’s got on the murderer he’s been hunting for nearly a decade, and threats his woman is receiving by an unsavory character from her past, and he’s seriously tempted to take Dalton Kipper’s offer to join his team in a permanent basis.

Rules have a place, but when you’re faced with losing the one that means most to you, lines can become blurred. With the fate of his family’s future hanging in the balance, he’s ready to risk it all.

“What are you doing here?” The tension around me palpable, she hurried aside to let me enter before closing the door behind us.

My blood boiled.

My skin crawled that she’d let him do that to her.

I had to get rid of it.

The taint.

Purify her.

“What have you done? You’re mine, Evie. I told you, when I came back, you’d be mine and now look at yourself.” Disgust was as clear in my voice as it was in my expression.

“Wh-whatever it is…we can talk this out,” she stuttered, her feet inching her backward as I followed her movements.

Reaching to the small of my back, my fingers wrapped around the grip as I pulled it from its sheath. The eight-inch blade caught the glint of the afternoon sun, mesmerizing me, causing me to admire the play of light against it before I focused on the woman before me.

Her eyes shone with terror. “You don’t…” She shook her head left to right, swallowing hard, stumbling against the side table next to the sofa. “You don’t have to do this.” She righted herself. “We can still be together. Now that…now that you’re back–”

I shot her an incredulous look. Did she think me a fool? “You’ve gone and done the unthinkable. You had his child!” I hollered, my knuckles gripping the knife tightly. “This is the only way…the only way to get rid of the stain.”

Her steps froze momentarily. “Stain?”

“It’s what I should have done a while ago,” I spat, cornering her as her steps were halted by the wall at her back. “What you took from me…what should have been mine,” I raged, “is what I’ll take from you.”

One moment my eyes darted toward the hallway where I knew the devil lay in slumber, and the next, Eva Peters was making a mad rush toward the door that separated me from saving us all.

“No!” she panted. “You’re crazy!”

If she only knew. “Move, Evie,” I growled, “it’s the only way.”

“She’s not here. Please!” Tears streamed down her face, her body shaking with fear.

Using the tip of the blade, I ran it over her soaked cheek, the metal sharp enough to catch on her ivory skin, causing a streak of blood to suddenly materialize.

I felt lighter instantly.

In control. A feeling I hadn’t had in quite some time.

Manning my knife, I proceeded to run the tip of it down to her bottom lip, nicking it just enough for another bubble of her essence to form.

“Mmm…” I groaned, leaning forward to press my front against hers, taking the time to lick her damaged lip, then whispered my new realization while rubbing my impossibly hard cock against her stomach. “I was wrong. This…” I ran my finger through the blood on her cheek, watching its movement, “is what I need, Evie.”

The sadness was overwhelming as I stared at the beauty laying limp and lifeless beneath me.

The rage I’d felt had all but dissipated with each slice of my blade through her flesh. Like a hot knife through butter, each time blood began to pour out, a weight lifted within me.

What once held pleading in her eyes, was now long gone.

She was nothing but a piece of art, trussed up by her silk scarves, a vessel conveying my message.

I’d be back…

My Review

Even though this is book two in the series, it can be read as a stand alone.

In this story Shane is a police detective whose wife was murdered when his daughter was a baby. Her killer has been taunting him ever since. Murdering women who resemble his wife and leaving clues in the form of pieces of a picture.

Emberlyn is starting her life a new. Her ex husband went to jail for abuse and she has been moving and hiding since. For the past two years she has been living in her grandmother’s house. Right across the street from the cutest little girl and her extremely hot cop father. When the cop asks her out she is happy but cautious. She hasn’t dated since her divorce.

When Em starts getting strange gifts and she starts finding them in her home, she then begins to worry. Shane has figured out who the killer is but he can’t find him. When things hit close to home he wonders who the next target is. It is a race against time and Shane could lose everything he loves. Can he find the killer before the clock runs out?

Man this book was full of excitement and thrills. It will have you on the edge of your seat. The characters are lovable and entertaining. The book is a fast paced read with several oh no moments. All the mystery of a thrilling drama with a dose of romance that is sweet and hot.

She can’t run away from me…she’s carrying my babies.
Serena, you’re mine and only mine.

I was a bigger jerk thinking she would wait for me.
She says she doesn’t need me in her life now.
But one look into her luscious eyes and at that pregnant belly,
And I know…I will do all it takes to make her mine.

Another great book by Bella Winters.

In this story Serena is a small town girl struggling to make it in the big city. When she gets a job at a bar as a shot girl she feels life can’t get any lower. Uncomfortable in her skimpy uniform and old men pawing her she feels like yep can’t get much worse. Then she meets Ben.

Ben is a handsome successful business man. But he is a playboy and has no intention of ever settling down. Till he meets Serena. He is so captured by her. When she finds out she will be homeless soon, he suggests her moving in with him. Things are moving fast and things are hot and heavy. That is till he gets news of his business not performing as well as it was.

Well Ben freaks out! When he talks to Serena about this and his plans to move slow, he is interrupted by her news of he is going to be a father. He flips out and kicks her out.

With no money, pregnant and no place to live Serena is devastated. Was this all a dream? She must take of the rose-colored glasses and face reality.

Will Ben ever get his life together and fix the mess he mad of it? Will he be able to convince her to give him another try?

I really enjoyed this love story. The characters were interesting and lovable. There were some oh no he didn’t moments and moments when I wanted to hit him. But in the end I found him to be wonderful and loving.

This book was a page turner of emotion. Then story was relatable and easy to read. A hot steamy number that will have you thinking dirty thoughts. 😉. An enjoyable love story 💕

My Review

Oh my!  I just love this Billionaire Matchmaker Series!  Well not a series per say, but they have the same characters from previous books in them.  But any who!  I just love these books.  They are so much fun to read.

In this book Lesli is young and super smart.  Finishing school with her PhD at the age of 22 is quite the accomplishment.  But now that school is over she is not sure what to do with life.  But she is sure of one thing.  Change!  She wants to have a new life.  One she is not treated as the geek girl.  The outcast.  So she packs up and moves to Miami Florida to live with her cousin Lacey.

Her first day working for Ophelia’s Angels finds her face to face with the most handsome man she has ever seen.  Magnus.  Ever woman in the office is swooning over the hottest most eligible bachelor in Miami.  Everyone is dying to go out with him.  Everyone except Lesli.  When Magnus asks her out she turns him down.  Why would a handsome man like Magnus be interested in her?

When her and Magnus are paired up for work to compete against others on a game show, Lesli realizes she may not have much of a choice about him.   Magnus is persistent and tries to find new ways to get her to spend time with him.  But after a hot night of passion Lesli gets scared and runs.  Leaving Magnus to move on to someone new.

Can they win the competition?  Has Lesli lost her chance at love?

This book was funny and highly entertaining with wonderful characters, old and new.  Let’s not forget ol’ Oliver.  He makes his appearance.  🙂  Poor Lesli really has some self-esteem issues.  It is good to see how Lacey and Misha are doing since their marriages, that Oliver helped match.

If you are looking for a steamy read with fun and romance, then you will love this book.  It is wonderful and flows smoothly.  I love Summer Cooper’s novels.  All of them consists of hot sexy Alpha males finding their own HEA with wonderful women.  She sure can write a good hot steamy scene too!  They will make your toes curl.

If you want to know more about the previous characters then I suggest you read those books as well.  Even though these books can be read individually, they interconnect with the characters.  A wonderful HEA!

So pick them up today and let those imaginations run wild.
