My Review2I just have to say wow!  This book was a very heartbreaking and emotional.  To not be given any choices in your own life.  This book pulled my heart into a million pieces.

In this story Eli is a 14-year-old girl who goes into labor and has her baby taken from her as soon as the cord is cut, with no choice of her own.  She is shunned and no one will even acknowledge her in her town.  She marries a wonderful man named Tommy at the age of 17.  He not only shows her kindness, but never treats her as anything other than special and loved.  For thirty years she tries to piece her life back together, even though she is treated as a leaper by everyone except her husband.  One day she bumps into a woman who she thinks is her.  She shares the news with her husband and he is not sure if she is seeing things.  Can Eli prove she is not going crazy?  Can Tommy help her put the pieces together?

Eli has been through so much and yet she still holds out hope that one day she will be reunited with the daughter she was not allowed to have.  I was really disappointed in the way that everyone treats her.  It was so heartbreaking.  Tommy is a saint and sweet man, who tries to stand by her and help her to cope the best he can.  He shows her such kindness and love.  Never looking away but always towards her.  Both their dreams were taken from them at such a young age.  The story is very touching and emotional.  You will be drawn in and wonder how is it that people are so cruel and how can someone who never has much choice in life can survive to be so strong.

This book is very well written.  I did not really care for the journal entry parts that much, even though they are there to show you how she is feeling at times.  They just spring up and it was a bit confusing to me, flashing back and forth.  Other than that it was an amazing story.

IMG_1388[1673].JPGem muslin has worked in the film and television industry for over 20 years. She first fell in love with reading and writing after experiencing Judith Kerr’s When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. She hasn’t stopped devouring books ever since.

She loves words that capture an experience or emotion in a singular form: her current favourite, describing herself, isnemophilist

Em’s writing career has included developing a script for a stage musical with Tina Turner, and writing a bitter-sweet comedy screenplay, Last Chance Saloon

Em’s writing focuses on the texture of domestic life, relationships, family and the pressures of social convention. Her characters are often fighting to become the hero of their own story, searching for hope, despite the adversities that life inevitably brings.
